About the Trust
The Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Trust was founded in March 2008 to celebrate and profile the legacy of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, founding President of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) and liberation struggle icon.
The Trust aims to advance the thoughts and ideals of Robert Sobukwe and ensure that his voice is raised within African and international discourse.
Sobukwe Trust projects have included the construction and set up of the Robert Sobukwe Museum & Learning Centre, workshops exploring local history & heritage within a human rights context, a traveling exhibition project (2015), a community-based oral history project (2015/2016), a community drama project that stimulated dialogue on socio-economic rights (2017/2018), the development of a youth tourism cooperative linked to the museum and most recently the Craft-Tech Club.
This work has been achieved with the support of the National Lotteries Commission (museum construction), The Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works (land donation) the Department of Arts and Culture (traveling exhibition project), the National Heritage Council (oral history project) and the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (youth tourism development), the Foundation for Human Rights (drama and dialogue) and the Department of Arts and Culture (museum set-up project). The Beyers Naude Municipality has provided ongoing support to the Sobukwe Trust.
